Milk by apple. Flour by Prada. Coffee by Cartier. Peddy Mergui, owner of a brand firm, and a senior professor of design at the Holon Institute of Technology, has made an interesting exhibition called Wheat is Wheat is Wheat. “By infusing the packaging of our most basic commodities with values of prestige and luxury, Wheat is Wheat is Wheat explores the dynamic and often blurred ethical boundaries of design within consumer culture. This exhibition is meant to highlight the challenges a designer faces when tasked with promoting economic interests while remaining true to his or her own moral compass. The various exhibits combine shapes and images from the world of consumption with concepts from the field of consumer ethics. They serve to highlight both the contentious, potentially arbitrary connection that products have to packaging, and the ethically challenging conditions in which designers are asked to operate. Using humorous, yet provocative undertones, Wheat is Wheat is Wheat will leave you with more questions than answers – particularly on your next trip to the supermarket. The exhibits were created as works of art and are the result of the freedom of creative artistic expression.”

The Customers fill their own bottle, 2dl or 1 L, from a dispenser machine. The milk comes from cows fed 70% with grass, instead of concentrate which usually is the main feed. Grass milk is healthier and also more costly for the farmer, because the cows can only produce half the amount of milk. Apparently the milk tastes delicious and it’s now up to the Åre Customers to decide if the “Grass milk” is here to stay!

Adrián Froufe is a spanish product designer based in Milan (Italy) and here is his Product Design BA Final Project. “100×100 is a brand dedicated to organic food that seeks to create links between rural producers and urban consumers and tries to improve the quality of the products we consume in our day to day lives. In addition, we have tought to give this brand a new and attractive aesthetic component that breaks with the classic image of organic and environmentally friendly products. All packaging of 100×100, except for the obvious elements, is made of the same material: corrugated cardboard, to which the seeds of various herbs are added in the manufacturing process. When the container is no longer useful, it can be planted and the seeds will sproud. Thus, the idea of recycling takes on a different dimension to the traditional: From our waste we can generate life.” Made with the assistance of Frédéric Misik. Designed by Beza Project ” Milk & Honey is a set designed for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for polish presidency in European Union. The set consist of the honey, mug, honey spoon and recipe for preparing a traditional drink: milk with honey. The drink itself has a delicate taste and health-giving properties – it strengthens the heart and supports the body in its fight against cold and stress. The design of the set has been inspired by motifs originating from Polish culture and tradition. The shape of the china mug resembles a traditional milk can and the spoon is shaped like the quill pen of a poet who describes the land flowing with milk and honey.”

All packaging is reproduced individually, making each piece a little bit different, just as products from an organic farm. The concept The Grass is Greener on our side is emphasized throughout the brand and product lines by the use of biodegradable paper made with grass seeds. So wherever and however the packaging is disposed, grass will grow one way to give back to the farm’s free range animals.”

Wow! Envision Design has done a really good job developing a packaging collection for Knuthenlund. “On 1 July 2007, Knuthenlund estate converted its farming operations to organic production, and in doing so became one of the very biggest organic farms in Denmark. In converting to organics, Knuthenlund embarked on a new chapter in its long history. We have greatly looked forward to the great challenge of running the estate as an organic enterprise. On Lolland we have some of the best farmland in Denmark, and possibly even the best climate. In our view, we must capitalise on this to supply the best produce in Denmark. Converting the estate to organic production is a major commitment, but we hope we can thereby demonstrate that there is an alternative approach to professional farming – one that takes both the working and natural environment into consideration as well as animal welfare.” Via Lovely Package
